AirPort Edit ]

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
AirPort is Apple to the IEEE 802.11 (also known as the Wi-Fi ) standard based wireless network system can be compatible with the other certified devices 802.11. The latest product family, based on the IEEE 802.11ac specification, offers speeds of up to 1.3Gbps per second and is compatible with and shared with older products.
Somewhat confusingly, AirPort and AirPort Extreme are also used as protocols (individual 802.11b and 802.11g), expansion cards, and base stations.
In the Japanese market, this system is also known as AirMac .

Overview edit ]

AirPort 1999 July 21 at New York 's Macworld Expo for the first time in the exhibition. Initially provided to include Apple's new iBook product line optional expansion card, plus an AirPort base station.
The original AirPort system can achieve a maximum transfer rate of 11 Mbit/s. The antenna is integrated around the iBook display, so the receiving capability is very good. Apple Computer is also the first manufacturer to embrace 802.11b wireless networks. AirPort expansion cards have since been added as an option to almost all Apple product lines, including PowerBooks , eMacs , iMacs , and PowerMacs . Only Xserve does not have AirPort's optional equipment.
On January 7, 2003, Apple Computer introduced AirPort Extreme based on the 802.11g specification The AirPort Extreme can achieve a maximum data transfer rate of 54 Mbit/s and is backward compatible (unlike competitors 802.11a cannot be forward compatible) with existing 802.11b base stations in coffee shops, retail stores, offices, and homes. All Apple Computers' current computer models, with the exception of the Xserve , have a slot that plugs into the AirPort Extreme expansion card, and all PowerBook and iBook models now ship the wireless card as standard. AirPort and AirPort Extreme are physically incompatible: AirPort Extreme expansion cards cannot be installed on older Mac machines, and AirPort expansion cards cannot be installed on newer Mac machines. However, the AirPort Extreme device can also communicate with other 802.11g-based devices or 802.11b AirPort expansion cards.
The original AirPort expansion card is using Lucent Telecommunications (Lucent) wafers, but unlike Lucent WaveLan Silver Card (equivalent to 40 yuan expansion card), in the spring of 2001 Apple released firmware updates to enhance the level of encryption to 128 Bit (effectively provides a free upgrade to the Lucent WaveLan Gold Card). By 2004, the original AirPort stopped production.

Base station edit ]

Original graphite AirPort Base Station
AirPort base stations are used to connect AirPort computers to the Internet , wired LANs, or other devices.

AirPort Edit ]

The original version ( graphite gray color) provides modem and Ethernet features section, based on Lucent Technologies WaveLan PC-Card is based on the use of embedded Intel 80486 processor.
The second generation model ( dual Ethernet or white color) on November 13, 2001 launch, has two Ethernet features section, one for LAN , the other one is for WAN use. It also adds compatibility with AOL dial-up services, making AirPort the only wireless solution that can perform these functions. This model is based on Motorola 's PowerPC 860 processor.

AirPort Extreme Edit ]

Airport Extreme is Apple in the Macintosh wireless solutions on the platform. Airport Extreme simply means that the wireless network , but Apple defines it takes other general wireless network solutions have slightly different. On the Macintosh computer and router 's wireless network base, Airport Extreme uses the Airport Extreme expansion card (wireless network card).
On January 7, 2003, the AirPort Base Station was replaced by the AirPort Extreme Base Station. In addition AirPort Extreme also provides a faster transmission speed, it adds an external antenna port, and a USB port may be connected to a printer . Internet users can use the Bonjour protocol and IPP to use the printer. There is also a second, cheaper version, lacking a modem and an external antenna, but it was terminated after the mid-2004 launch of AirPort Express. On April 19, 2004, the third edition was launched, supporting Power over Ethernet and complying with UL 's 2043 fire management regulations.
All AirPort Extreme models use the AMD Alchemy Au1500, a processor based on the MIPS architecture .
AirPort Extreme has a minimum effective coverage of 150 square meters.[Source request]

AirPort Express Edit ]

AirPort Express
AirPort Express is a simplified and streamlined AirPort Extreme base station with a new feature called AirTunes. He did not replace the AirPort Extreme base station. Apple on June 7, 2004 launch, and contains analog with digital sound output; and a USB port to the remote printing; and an Ethernet port. The output of the sound is for the AirTunes function, allowing iTunes music to be streamed over the wireless network . AirPort Express can also easily extend wireless coverage through WDS bridging.
The main processor of AirPort Express is the Broadcom BCM4712KFB wireless network chip. He is a built-in 200MHz MIPS processor. Sound part by Texas Instruments for processing digital PCM2705 (Texas Instruments) to analog converter wafer.
The AirPort Express USB port can also be used to connect to Keyspan 's USB infrared remote control to control AirTunes.

AirPort Time Capsule Edit ]

The AirPort Time Capsule is an AirPort Extreme base station equipped with a hard disk that can serve as both a router and a network attached storage . The launch of the first-generation Time Capsule in 2008 did not include a wireless base station, which is now available in the fifth generation.

Security edit ]

In radio frequency-based networks, security is an important part because the system may be accessed from remote locations. Like most WLAN systems, wireless RF network security is based on the WEP standard, giving some native restrictions as security protection, but many security companies have already considered this protection to be cracked. The latest base station, AirPort Extreme, also offers WPA security. There are more important issues in the management and preset AirPort configuration settings. After resetting the configuration, the base station will enter the state of all functions, but the preset does not provide encryption. The system provides remote management, but it uses a publicly-known and well-known preset 1password.
Even if the management interface is password security has been updated to a safe value, but also found a password management system is used, there is not even encrypted 2 transmitted on the Internet. In response to this discovery, Apple Computerissued a statement saying that AirPort's management should be handled by wired connections or via WEP-encrypted networks. However, if the user is accidentally or ignorantly doing remote management of AirPort on an insecure network, unfortunately the system software does not give the user any warning.
The installation manual included with the AirPort Extreme Base Station contains almost no guidelines for security, that is, information on the default password, and the location of the security slot (using cable lock can be used as a physical security feature). In 2004, a lack of clear guidance on information security of the AirPort AirPort website, but in can be downloaded Designing Airport Networks on manual, there is a chapter dedicated to security 3 . Another website can get support from the Manual Managing AirPort Extreme Networks , also includes a choice of encryption technology 4 chapters, and includes a comparison of different technologies. This section provides basic security advice, but it does not fully cover certain risks; for example, in the part of the closed network, the user said "must know the name of the network", but did not mention it was guessed Probability.
In terms of IP network, AirPort default configuration provides network address translation NAT gateway, which is a basic function of stateful firewall . Although this function is not to provide all the complete application level filtering, but also means through AirPort base station is connected to the Internet computer will connect directly to the Internet than there is better protection.
If used by experienced managers with good security knowledge, AirPort base stations can become part of the solution and provide an acceptable level of security for most applications. If the situation is to allow inexperienced users with only a few WLAN security knowledge to set up a base station, the AirPort system will easily allow easy setup on unsecured wireless networks without providing any warning to the user.
