AA.20 is the air-to-air missile successfully developed by Northern Air France in 1956. It is the first air-to-air missile used by Western European countries. Before AA.20 was decommissioned in 1960, a total of 6,000 were put into service [1] .

R&D edit ]

France began researching and developing AA.20 in 1953. The contract for research and development was signed by SFECMAS. The latter was finally merged into Northern Airlines. AA.20 was developed based on SS.10 anti - tank missiles . It is also known as Type 5103 [1] . The purpose of research and development is to develop more advanced missiles, and regard AA.20 as a stepping stone, and finally successfully developed R.530 air-to-air missiles [2] .

Performance edit ]

AA.20 uses a command and guidance system , and Northern Air's anti-tank missiles are similar systems. AA.20 is commanded by the launching device, and the fixed wing with sweepback angle is responsible for stabilizing the roll degree , and the gyroscope will transmit the forward position to the control device. Launched by the twin solid rockets , and then another solid rocket to take over to maintain speed [1] . The rocket's nozzle has four baffles to change the direction of flight. The tail of the missile is equipped with a flasher, which helps the pilot to visually guide during the flight.
The 134 kilograms of AA.20 have a range of 4 kilometers. The warhead is a 23 kilogram high burst type. The close-in pipe will detonate the warhead at a distance of 15 meters from the target [3] . The command guidance system of AA.20 makes it an auxiliary air defense force, but it cannot be used at night or when the weather is bad [2] .
