Max - Planck Institute for Astronomy ( Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, MPIA ) is Max - Planck Society is a research institution. It is located in Baden-Württemberg , Germany ]] [[Heidelberg, near Odenwald, next to the historic Landessternwarte Heidelberg-Königstuhl Observatory .
This institution was established in 1967. Its founding directors were H. Elsässer and G. Munch. His successors were K.-H. Böhm, George Herbig|GH Herbig, and SVW Beckwith. The current directors are Hans-Walter Lix and Thomas Henning.

Research Interests [ edit ]
Current research interests include the formation of planets and stars of the Thomas Henning Group , and the galaxy and universe of the Hans-Walter Lix Group .
MPIA also established a number of ground-based telescopes and satellites, including the following:
- Karaato Observatory : Operated by the MPIA and Andalusia Institute of Astrophysics.
- Parina Observatory
- Large binoculars
- Herschel Space Telescope
Degree Program [ edit ]
The International Marx Planck School of Research (IMPRS) astronomy and cosmology is a course offering a doctoral degree in astrophysics . This school operates in cooperation with Heidelberg University .
