History [ edit ]
In November 2015, Slovenia began building a barrier consisting of wire mesh . The stated goal of the barrier is to control the flow of refugees and migrants while the border remains open. [2] The 400-mile boundary between Slovenia and Croatia forms the southeast border of the Schengen area , which is a passport-free area shared by EU member states. On October 16, 2015 , hundreds of thousands of migrants tried to enter the Schengen area after Hungary closed its borders . Among them, more than 171,000 Afghan and Syrian refugees entered Slovenia from Croatia. [3] [2] The migration of immigrants may be transferred to the route through Albania and Italy. [3]
In March 2016, Slovenia prohibited immigrants from crossing the border, [4] and announced that only immigrants who had applied for asylum in Slovenia and immigrants with clear humanitarian needs were allowed to enter the territory of Slovenia. In response, Serbia announced the closure of its borders with Macedonia and Bulgaria to immigrants without valid documents. [1]
Impact on the environment [ edit ]
Croatia complained to the European Union that the Slovenian fence is an obstacle to the migration of wild animals such as deer . "Slovenia violates European legislation on the protection of natural habitats and the environment." [5] The wire fence fenced by Slovenia in December 2015 at the junction with Istria and Gorski Kotar in the western part of Croatia endangered the habitat of wolves and brown bears . Everyone in Croatia is protected by law. The local hunters discovered the deer killed by the wall. [6] The World Wide Fund for Nature and residents from both sides of the border protested the decision to build barbed wire. [6] [7] [8]
